I was casually chatting with our CEO over burgers at our biannual sales conference…we were talking about his recent vacation where he went sailing with a few buddies. It turns out he is really into sailing. We dive into an energetic conversation about pursuing passions and how difficult is to find the time. The next thing I know, I’ve agreed to do a dance video for the next all hands company meeting…

Wait…what?!

Yeah, it pretty much went like that.  We move quickly at SAY, however I learned that goes well beyond just business ideas…apparently, ANY interesting idea…

So the next day, I roll into our SF office, assuming it was just a fleeting idea.  Our resident video bad-ass, Eliot, finds me and tells me that he was given some vague direction by our VP of Marketing, who spoke to our CEO, that he needs to create a video of me dancing.

By the grace of an iPhone, I flip thru a few tracks and find a song that feels right.  Eliot grabs his camera, a few lenses and I grab a pair of headphones.  Neither of us have a vision or any direction but we expect creative inspiration to take over.

20 minutes later, you get this:

Neither of us had any idea how far this would go, or how entertained anyone would be, but after one of my coworkers enthusiastically explained how he loaded Vimeo on his 50″ HDTV and played MY video for his wife, I realized my collaboration with Eliot was epic.

John Wall is the #1 overall pick from last years draft for the washington wizards. He’s the top rookie and he played one year at kentucky. My friend (initials UK) loves Kentucky because their initials are KU. John does the dougie as he walks on court.

He takes pieces of nature and classic art mediums to create amazing artworks that fall somewhere between paintings and sculptures, ie. sculptural paintings.

He starts his work as just a landscape drawing and then begins to built from that base with all the different layers of resins, wood, metal, etc.

So I came across this post on Behance’s portfolio page and it has inspired me to start thinking about wall art and building in large scale again.  I’ve been meaning to dust off my artistic skills and create unique artwork for the apartment, but have been lazy and uninspired.

The illustration below is based on Liev Schreiber’s adaptation of “Everything is Illuminated”.
What inspires me is the idea of depth presented here.  I think I can recreate something like this with simple resources: cardboard, the guts of a clock, glue, some paint and my artistic skills.

My trip to the SF MOMA also helped to inspire this thought.  By looking at works by Roy Lichtenstein and a few other artists, I was inspired by their use of color and space to create vibrancy and depth.

So here is the thought – me + cardboard + the guts of a clock + some sort of adhesive = dope wall art.

It’s built from a top down experience – major categories/stories live at the highest level and story depth lives below, so you just “flick” down to get the full story.

The most notable pieces:

Dual axis interaction – The horizontal strip across the top of the interface acts the same way a feature section to a blog does – it gives you the one liner/spark to engage you.  To see more of the contact, rather than tapping to go deeper, you flick up to see the depth of the content below.  It functions similar to this presentation software: Prezi The entire experience can be zoomed out and it looks like one giant canvas that you can zoom in and out of, gesture thru without feeling like you missed anything.
Tactile 360 Products - The biggest thing we miss on the laptop/desktop, tv, etc is the ability to touch and feel the product.  Being able to spin a product with your hands using gestures that then follow the laws of physics creates an associated reality feeling.  You actually think you are touching the real thing.  Adding sound, lighting and other cues that we find in nature to this experience could also greatly impact the quality of experience.
